Why?

Butterflies make essential contributions to the earth’s eco system; they sustain biodiversity. Butterflies are pollinators. As they feed, the adults visit from flower to flower of the same species in search of nectar. These seemingly delicate insects have long been of interest to entomologists, biologists, and lepidopterists. They are an inspiration to poets, artists, musicians, photographers and authors. Library shelves are lined with butterfly related books. They have cultural and economic implications. They are intriguing to nature lovers, gardeners, and children. Not to mention they hold excellent educational value that incorporates a hands on science and nature experience of a complete metamorphosis, while helping people of all ages realize the mystery and the complexity of our great mother earth.

Did you know that there are about 700 species of butterflies found in North America (not including Mexico) and about 400 of them, more than half, are found in Arizona. One of great significance to our state is the Two Tailed Swallow Tail (papilionidae papilio multicaudata) which is the official state butterfly
